One issue is that when Task Manager is opened, Edge processes will be displayed totally different from other browsers. This can be confusing to users who don’t know what’s going on, and they might think their computer has a virus or something else wrong with it.

We can all agree that not knowing what is going on with your computer can be very irritating, and the tech giant is working to remedy the issue.

With this in mind, Microsoft Edge’s representation in Windows Task Manager has already been improved.

Insiders who are self-hosting Windows 11 and using the Edge 94 Stable version may now see these improvements.

The primary aim of these enhancements is to enable users better understand where their resources are going and to assist them in making informed choices when they encounter a performance problem.

You may view a list of processes called Microsoft Edge when you open Windows Task Manager and expand Microsoft Edge on the Processes tab.

With the most recent updates to Windows Task Manager, you can now get a comprehensive view of the Microsoft Edge processes.

If you’re unfamiliar with Edge’s multi-process design, Redmond staff attempted to explain it as best they could.

Among the upcoming modifications are:

  • You’ll notice the process type with a detailed name and icon for the browser, GPU, and crashpad processes (such as Browser, GPU Process, or Crashpad.)
  • The process type and the name of the service, plug-in, or extension are shown for the utility, plug-in, and extension processes.
  • Processes for renderers include:
    • The term ‘tab’, as well as the site name and symbol, will be shown for tabs (Note: For InPrivate tabs, site name will be removed and icon will updated to a default tab icon)
    • You’ll notice the word’subframe’ followed by the subframe’s URL for subframes (usually used for advertising).
  • There will be a list of all devoted and service employees.

In the Windows Task Manager, rows under Microsoft Edge aren’t usually a distinct process. Numerous lines will be used to indicate multiple things in certain procedures.

There are many methods for determining which things are in their own process and which ones are part of a shared process. You’ll notice various actions while finishing jobs based on the process you’re finishing.

  • All processes associated with that instance of Microsoft Edge will be closed.
  • Processes on the GPU and utility processes will terminate and resume. You may notice a short change in your Microsoft Edge window as the processes complete. When the GPU process is closed, for example, your Microsoft Edge window will briefly turn black before returning to normal once the process is restarted; similarly, when the audio utility process is closed, if you are listening to music, your audio will briefly stop before returning to normal once the process is restarted.
  • Processes of the renderer: The process will be closed. If the process has tabs, all of the tabs will be replaced with an error page that says, “This page is experiencing a difficulty.” The visible subframes will be replaced with a crashed tab symbol if the process includes subframes. You won’t notice a change with invisible subframes, but the page may be impacted in some manner.
  • Extension and plug-in processes: A bubble will appear in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen, stating that the extension or plug-in has crashed and requesting that you reload it.
  • Crashpad processes: The process will be terminated. Other methods of reporting crashes in Microsoft Edge exist.
  • Dedicated workers/service workers: A tab’s functionality may be compromised.

If you’re acquainted with Microsoft Edge, you can access the Task Manager by hitting Shift+Esc while the browser is active.

These improvements are now accessible to Insiders who are self-hosting Windows 11 and using the Edge 94 Stable version, as stated above.
