First, open up the Settings app on your phone. Then, scroll down and select Keyboard. Finally, tap on Character Count and turn it on. Now, when you’re typing out a text, the character count will appear at the bottom of the screen so that you can stay within bounds.

If you have an iPhone 6s or later, you can also use 3D Touch to see the character count. Just press down on the text field and the character count will appear above it.
